Heb 12:10-11

For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

The way we view difficulty benefits from perspective. But it’s something we rarely have.

When we were children and our parents disciplined us, how did we react? “It’s SO unfair!” Or something similar. We didn’t like it and we didn’t understand it.

But as we grow up, we get some perspective. We see why discipline was necessary. What parent doesn’t discipline their children? Any good parent does it for the good of the child, to teach them and correct them. When they are disciplined they learn that there are consequences for their actions. It’s an important part of maturing.

The writer of Hebrews is referring to this truth. When we grow up we know it to be true. And they are using it to compare to the discipline of God. We might not understand it, we might find it to be painful – but we need to understand it’s for our benefit.

God loves us and a living Father will discipline His children for their own benefit. To teach, to protect and to guide. So that we may bear fruits of righteousness.

It’s good to get that perspective – otherwise we can react like children, “It’s SO unfair! Why do you hate me! Why are you so mean to me?” We’d do better in these times, learning from them and growing as a result of them.
