Jun 6 – 2 Samuel 9, 2 Samuel 10 Acts 3 Psalm 70:1-5

2 Sam 9:1

David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

Why did David help Mephibosheth? He didn’t just invite him for a meal, but from this time he lived in Jerusalem and always ate at the kings table.

David did this to honour his friend Jonathan. But notice – he didn’t ask for Jonathan’s son – but any of the house of Saul that was left who he could show kindness to. He’d have shown kindness to any of the serving family – not just Mephibosheth.

This was extremely honourable and very much not the norm. A new king would really want to kill off the former king’s family to strengthen his claim. Mephibosheth would have been worried this would happen.

But David honoured the past, whilst not getting stuck in it. He must act kind and honourable. That’s what makes us different. David set a great example here.

Acts 3:9-10

When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognised him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

It all happens in God’s timing. This man who had sat by the gate called beautiful for years had been sat there every time Jesus passed to go into the temple.

Can you imagine how he felt? The miracle worker – the one everyone in the city was talking about a few months ago… there was not a person in the city who did not know about Him… had never healed this lame man.

Did he feel left out? Did he feel bitter? Maybe. That would be natural.

But God had already chosen he time for his healing. HIs healing would show that the same Spirit that Christ had, the church has. God used this moment to show the world that Jesus still changed lives. It was worth the wait! It was a miracle that could not be denied because everyone knew this guy!

It might not ever seem like it in the moment, but God’s timing is perfect.
