John 19:34-36

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”

Who is the man who saw this, who gave testimony that is true? It’s John. He’s speaking about himself in the third person as he often does in his book.

John is saying – “I saw this. I saw it with my own eyes – it’s absolutely true. This is not second hand information… And I’m telling you so that you may believe”.
