Oct 16 Jeremiah 32:26-44, Jeremiah 33, Jeremiah 34 1 Timothy 1 Psalm 119:41-48

1 Tim 1:6-7

Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

What is Paul referring to here? People were getting themselves very taken up with endless genealogies and myths and controversial speculations.

Now first thing – this is not forbidding the use of genealogies… skeptics have long tried to say this verse contradicts the use of genealogies in the books of Matthew and Luke. Neither of those are endless… or speculation. They have their place.

But there were people who developing wild speculations based not the – finding supervisions and all kinds the rabbinical teachings.

The trouble is with speculation is that it can be very interesting and exciting… but it’s not based on anything solid. You can get lost in it.

And it only leads to heresy. People will easily wander in vain discussion… what if’s and how about… but it takes us away from the truth. There were people who desired to be teachers but were drawing people away. They sounded confident – but they were wrong.

Look, anybody can write a book. It doesn’t’ make them right. Many people can teach effectively and confidently. It doesn’t make them right.

Hold fast to truth. Test everything. Don’t get carried away with speculation and wild ideas. How do we know what’s true I has to match up to the word. It has to be rooted in the bible.

Paul goes on to say the law is good if used properly. Teaching the word is an immense responsibility, as it hearing it. We are to rightly divide the word of truth.
