Jun 24 – 1 Kings 12:25-33, 1 Kings 13, 1 Kings 14:1-20 Acts 16:1-15 Psalm 78:1-8

1 Kings 13:16-19

And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place,

for it was said to me by the word of the LORD, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.'”

And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.'” But he lied to him.

So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.

Wow. Someone who said they’d heard from God, said they were a prophet – but was lying. Good thing that sort of thing doesn’t happen any more… wait, what? It does?

When someone gives you a word you need to test it. You need to check not just take it on face value. And if the word contradicts something God has already said… then it’s safe to assume that it’s not true.

Acts 16:10

And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Just a little note here. The narrative form of Acts changes at this point. It changes from them to We. It moves from third person to first. It isn’t like this for all of the rest of the book, but it’s here, for a time that Luke joins with Paul and is part of the journey. We know Luke talks with eyewitnesses to find the facts – but in the case of this section, he himself is an eyewitness!
