1 Sam 3:1

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD in the presence of Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.

The word of the Lord was rare in those days. Was it that God was not speaking, or that people were not listening?

God wants to speak, but He is looking for willing, humble servants to speak through.

In Eli and his sons, the word of the Lord was rare – because the messengers were not suitable.

But then comes Samuel. In verse 19 and 20 we get a wonderful picture of the ministry of Samuel:

“And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the LORD.”

The word was rare – but then out of the dry times, the right person came along and NONE of his words fell to the ground. IN other words all his words set out to accomplish what God wanted. Everyone knew God was with him because of the words he was saying.

If the word of the Lord seems distant today – it’s because God is looking for true worshippers to deliver it. When he looks at you, what does He see? Eli? Or Samuel?
