John 1:1-3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John’s gospel was the last to be written. It’s the most reflective and the most theological of all the gospels. This one was written by John, who was so close to Jesus and was one of the few of Jesus’ followers to be present at the cross.

This gives the book of John a unique viewpoint. As it was written last, the John does not see the need to simply re-tell everything the other gospels have already recorded, but instead has the liberty to focus on areas less discussed. Also, there was already an amount of debate and bad theology on the nature of Christ already developing in the church. So John has an opportunity to correct that though his writing.

And he does that right form the start. He takes the story of Jesus right back to the dawn of time and very specifically points out that Jesus is the word of God and through Him everything that exists was made.

And that this word became flesh and dwelt amongst us? How amazing Jesus is!

As we go through the book of John expect many more statements like this, pointing out the divine nature of Jesus.

Ps 53:2-3

God looks down from heaven

on the children of man

to see if there are any who understand,

who seek after God.

They have all fallen away;

together they have become corrupt;

there is none who does good,

not even one.

Paul would use very similar language to this in the book of Romans. And it describes the real star of mankind. All have gone astray – all have become corrupt.

Not one of us is good. You might think that you are good on the surface, but you know deep down that’s not true.

But thank God that Jesus came to provide an answer to our corruption – that the only one who was good died for we who are not, that He took our place and made it possible for us to be saved.
