Jun 4 – 2 Samuel 5:6-25, 2 Samuel 6 Acts 1:23-26, Acts 2:1-21 Psalm 69:29-36

2 Sam 6:21-22

David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honour.”

This passage is a wonderful example of extravagant worship that is looked down on by people who don’t get it.

Michal despised David for his leaping and his dancing. But David didn’t care. Not that David had a problem with Michal, he’d very recently won her back – clearly she was an important person to him.

BUT – no matter how much you may care for someone, you should never let their opinion change how you worship and relate to God. David wasn’t going to change his style of worship for her, in fact he’d double down on his behaviour.

Worship is matter between God and you – not other people.

David wasn’t ashamed – he was willing to become even more undignified even to the point where he himself felt humiliated – it didn’t matter as long as he was giving glory to God.

Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

This was the moment that the church was born – when The Spirit of God fell.

The church was born with tongues of fire – a baptism of power. The power of The Holy Spirit to witness was built into the very foundation of the church. Something so crucial to the creation of the church is not something the church can survive without. We must never seek to be church without the presence and power of The Holy Spirit.
