Oct 18 Jeremiah 38, Jeremiah 39, Jeremiah 40:1-6 1 Timothy 3 Psalm 119:57-64

Ps 119:57

The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words.

It’s not a phrase we use very often, my portion. And, although it sounds very nice we can miss the meaning.

This word portion means…. well just what it sounds like. It’s a word that means a portion of something. It’s a territory,  a share of land. A share of food, or a prize. It’s mostly used to describe land. A portion of the land was very important to people in Israel, your identity was connected to your land. Your portion of land was your inheritance.

When we think in terms of inheritance or reward… then we can understand where the writer is coming from.

What reward to we strive for? What inheritance is the work all for? The writer is saying, the only inheritance, the only rewards is The Lord Himself. The Lord is enough for him.

That’s an equally great attitude today. We don’t live for the glory of what God can give us, we don’t serve Christ through and expectation of reward… because Christ is enough of a reward. We don’t follow Jesus because of what we can get… but because He’s worth following.
