May 23 – 1 Samuel 13, 1 Samuel 14:1-23 John 13:18-38 Psalm 66:13-20

1 Sam 13:8-9

He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.

So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering.

Saul is already showing signs that he is falling into a trap leaders often fall into. He’s not listening to the people around him (such as the God anointed prophet), he’s getting impatient and he’s running ahead in his own steam.

We need to be very careful when we are given responsibility that we don’t let it go to our heads. When we make it all about us, we get impatient and we rush ahead.

It pays to take your time, take good advice and think things through and to pray things through.

This is the seed of the mistake Saul would soon make that ruins his reign.
