3/4/18 – Numbers 35, Numbers 36:1-12 Luke 9:28-56 Psalm 40:9-17

Luke 9:34-36

As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One;c listen to him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

This event is so amazing and so extreme, you’d never add this if you were making things up, or even if you are unsure. It’s one of those stories that just blows my mind.

If there was any doubt about who Jesus was in your mind, if you’d experienced this event – this would deal with it.

He is the very Son of God, chosen by The Lord. Listen to him.

That’s good advice. Listen to Him. Our faith is rooted in the person of Jesus, yes absolutely. It’s rooted in the example of Jesus – yes that too. But let’s not forget the words and commands of Jesus.

Luke 9:46-48

An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”

It’s very human isn’t it, to continually jostle for position? It seems almost silly to think of the disciples arguing amongst themselves who was the greatest when Jesus is right there. But don’t we all do the same?

Sometimes we can be too keen to tell people what we’ve done rather than what he’s done. We can be keen to tell people what “He’s taught us” but actually are saying how much we think we’ve improved.

It’s something to watch. It’s not a race to the top, it’s a race to the bottom. The first is last and the last is first. It’s not about how great we become but how great He becomes through us.
