Rom 15:1-2

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Let each of us please his neighbour for his good, to build him up.

It’s amazing to know we are free. Who the Son sets free is free indeed! But we must be careful with this freedom that we have.

It’s easy to think, because we are free – what other people think of what we do doesn’t matter. If there is something they think is wrong, but we know is not – then it’s ok, we are free.

But that’s actually going against what Paul is saying here. What other people think does matter.

There are some who are weak in faith. And when they see us free in things that struggle with, then it can lead them into sin. Your freedom, if you are not careful can lead others to stumble. So we must consider what others think – not for our sake but for theirs.

For example – Jesus did not need to pay the temple tax. He was exempt – because as He said – He is the Son of God – the Son doesn’t need to pay that. But yet He paid it anyway. Why? As an example to those others.

It is better to choose to limit your own freedom for the sake of others, than to allow your freedom to cause someone else to stumble.
