18/2/18 – Exodus 23, Exodus 24 Mark 3:31-35, Mark 4:1-29 Psalm 22:22-31

Ex 23:2

Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.

It’s easy to follow the crowd. It’s easy to go with the flow. Swimming against the current is much harder.

When the crowd is in the wrong, it’s hard to stand up and say so. It’s hard to be a voice crying in the wilderness. It’s hard to feel like the only one making a stand.

But that’s precisely the place we should be. How can the crowd know that it’s doing wrong without a moral voice? How can anyone see in the darkness without a light. We are a light to the world – so we cannot allow the darkness to overtake us.

The world may be increasing in it’s Rebellion and sin – but we cannot. It may make us unpopular, but we cannot make ourselves complicit to the wrongs of the crowd.

Mark 4:3

“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.

When we look at this Parable, we often look at the seed. Some fell on the path, some on rocky ground, some amongst thorns and some on soil.

But let’s not look at the seed for the moment, as the seed is the result. Let’s look at the farmer.

What does he do? He went out to sow his seed. And he’s throwing this seed everywhere. He’s not checking the ground, he’s just scattering the seed. He’s not spending ages checking the ground, he’s throwing the seed about. He could have obsessed, only looking for the best ground – avoiding the path and the thorns, but no – he’s scattering it wherever he goes.

What is the seed? Jesus explains, it’s the word.

The farmer isn’t responsible for the results – his job is to scatter. And it’s the same for us. We can spend so long investigating the ground that we don’t end up scattering that much of the word. Don’t worry about the ground so much – but instead, scatter the word wherever you go. You’ll be surprised which seed takes root.
